Tigers get back on the golf course

The golf course in St. Regis is still covered with some snow, but the Superior golf team has been knocking the ball around on the small driving range they have near town.

“It’s spring golf,” Coach Seth Kuhl joked.

Kuhl said that the first couple of practices had a few kids out because of other engagements, but he hoped that things would be back in full swing this week. He said that he has two returning players in Dan Taron and Trevor Bailey.

“Both of them did all right last year,” Kuhl said.

Kuhl said that as coach he hopes to instill in the kids how to play a good game of golf as it is a sport they can “continue to play throughout their lives.”

“I’d like to get them to a point where they enjoy it and can run with it themselves,” Kuhl said. “There’s no perfect way to do anything. They have to learn for themselves what works for them. It’s more guiding than coaching.”

Kuhl said, for example, that everyone is going to have their own swing. He said that he hopes to teach them how to fix their own swing and perfect it.

“I’m excited. It’s always nice to get out there. Golf is the first sign of spring for me and it’s enjoyable,” Kuhl said. “I get to play a little golf with the kids.”

Kuhl said that in golf you are essentially playing against yourself.

“You want to have a better shot than you did before,” Kuhl said. “It’s a huge head game.”

He also mentioned that the kids will get to play on some pretty good courses throughout the year.

Kuhl said that this is his fourth year as head coach though he helped out for a couple of years before that. He said that they have a few weeks before the first golf tournament. Kuhl said it’s hard to tell if that’s enough time or not.

“It all depends. Most of my kids haven’t touched a club since last season, which makes it tough,” Kuhl said.
