MCPAC fundraiser a hit

The Mineral County Performing Arts Council (MCPAC) held their annual fundraiser at the end of last month on March 20 at the Superior Elementary School. The event featured the Ed Norton Big Band, an 18-piece ensemble, featuring trumpets, trombones, saxophones and rhythm section.

The tickets were nearly sold out and those in attendance enjoyed delicious desserts, Hors d’ oeuvres and a grand performance.

As with any performance, audience members stayed in their seats, but after a few songs that played to the tune of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Woody Herman, Glenn Miller, and Benny Goodman, everyone started to loosen up and move around.

With toes tapping, couples on the dance floor, more than enough food waiting to be consumed, MCPAC felt that they couldn’t have had a better turn out.

“We had a great time,” said John DuBois, from the West End.

Ten members of the DeBorgia community boarded a mini bus at the O-Aces Restaurant and traveled to Superior for the concert.

DuBois said that the group first had a small dinner at 4:30 p.m. and then boarded the bus to make it in time for the concert, which started at 6 p.m. The concert was wonderful and the group attendance was even better.  The ‘DeBorgia Cultural Society’ hopes to have similar outings in the near future.

Fred Carl said that the music reminded him of music from his time.

“This music reminds me of a time when my wife and I danced all night at the Governors Ball,” Carl said. “It was our kind of music.”

On May 7th, the Mineral County Performing Arts Council will present Laura Loge who will be performing songs composed by mothers, lullabies for mothers to sing, and arias representing how much influence our mothers have on us throughout life.  This performance will be free, but will ask for free will donations.

MCPAC has tried to expand its musical boundaries this year and hopes to provide concerts to the public in the future.
