The St. Regis golfers headed to the Loyola Invitational last week on April 7 and 8. Coach Dan Park said that they had decent weather for a change, which was nice.

Jocelyn Dockter qualified for state during the competition. She shot a 114 on Thursday and a 101 on Friday.

Park said that she was the only golfer who qualified last week, but noted a couple others came close. Steven Mellon missed qualifying by one stroke on Thursday. He scored a 101 and then 106 on Friday. Shelby Berg missed by three on the second day. She scored 134 on Thursday and 123 on Friday.

“I was hoping that more of them would qualify,” Park said. “But some of our players struggled a bit.”

Park said that he doesn’t doubt Mellon and Berg will qualify though. He noted that they were pretty close and he’s sure they’ll make the cut. He’s still hoping they get some more in there though.

Still, for the first golf tournament of the season, Park said he was “fairly pleased with how they did.”

“For some of them, it was their first tournament,” he noted.

The team played at Larchmont the first day, which Park described as a fairly long course. On Friday, they got to play at the country club in Missoula.

“It’s an honor to be able to play on these courses,” Park said. “They are pretty nice places. It’s nice that they let the kids come in every year to play.”

Park said that although kids are out walking the courses and doing quite a bit of golfing, the game is still more of a mental challenge.

“It’s going to get them mentally,” Park said.

This week, the team will play at Big Fork on Thursday and head to Plains on Saturday.
