Five students from Plains High School were inducted into the National Honors Society last Tuesday evening, and were recognized not only for their prestigious academic achievements, but leadership as well.

The National Honors Society was founded in 1921 to recognize students with excellent character and academic performance, and is now a prestigious, nationally known organization.  More than 15,000 schools and millions of students have been selected for membership.

About 75 people gathered in the Plains High School gym, including friends, families, and teachers.  Larry McDonald, principal of Plains High School welcomed the guests and congratulated the students on their success.

“This is a great occasion for students, and a proud moment for parents,” said McDonald.  “I am so happy to celebrate the accomplishments and academic success of these special kids.”

Students read poems and speeches, had a candle lighting ceremony for the five new inductees, and also took the N.H.S. pledge and were officially sworn into the society by another member.  The themes of the program were: scholarship, leadership, service and character, which are all values that members are required to uphold.

In order to be a member of N.H.S., a student must have at least a 3.25 grade point average for three consecutive semesters, which means you cannot qualify until the middle of the sophomore year of high school.   Grades are not the only thing that will make or break an ability to be a member.

“We really look at the over all character of a person, as well as any sort of leadership roles or activities they participate in,” said Denise Earhart, a teacher and N.H.S. class leader.

A panel of teachers and administrators look at the applications to see a well-rounded resume and solid grades in order to make the final decision.  Earhart also explained to parents and community members what the N.H.S. students do to give back.

“We work with the REACH after school program where the high school students mentor younger kids as well as participate in highway cleanups,” said Earhart.

The Plains High School chapter has been active since 1970, and each year it sponsors service projects for the community and school such as food drives, recycling programs, among others.

Guests enjoyed group photos, punch and cake at a reception after the ceremony was over.
