Mineral County sports year in review 2011

Winter sports season 2010-2011

Superior boys basketball

The Superior boys finished out the post season at the 6-B District tournament in Hamilton. The Bobcats started out with a game against Deer Lodge, losing by four points, 41-37. Then Superior faced Valley Christian in a loser-out game and fell short, 37-21 to end their season.

Superior girls basketball

The Lady Cats finished third at the 6-B District tournament in Hamilton to end their season. Superior faced Valley Christian twice in the District tournament and had the upper hand in the first game 46-41, but lost 29-27 in the consolation round to finish third.

St. Regis boys basketball

The St. Regis Tigers finished their season at the 14-C District tournament in Ronan. St. Regis played Two Eagle River and lost 61-38 in the first game. Then St. Regis battled Noxon and lost 53-15 in the loser out game to end their season.

St. Regis girls basketball

The Lady Tigers season was cut short when they dropped down to four players. Without a team of five, the girls forfeited the last few games of the regular season and missed out on playing at the District tournament.

Alberton boys basketball

The Alberton Panthers won one game and lost two at the 13-C District tournament in Frenchtown to end their season. The Panthers beat Philipsburg in the first game 42-31, but then lost to Lincoln and Seeley-Swan.

Alberton girls basketball

The Lady Panthers finished third at the 13-C District Tournament, but the top two teams advanced to divisionals. Coach Jim Balwin said that even though the team didn’t get to go on he felt that the ended the season on a high note.

Spring sports season 2011

Superior track and field

Superior sophomore Nicole Stroot won the State Class B track and field championship in the long jump in Butte. Stroot jumped 16-10 for the championship.

Stroots’ teammates sophomore Kinzie Cooper and junior Ashley Blaylock also made positive impacts for Superior at state. Blaylock finished eighth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:03.41. Cooper finished sixth in the pole vault with a jump of 9 feet.

Superior senior Christofer Eriksson won the State Class B track and field championship in the pole vault with a jump of 13 feet.

St. Regis track and field

St. Regis senior Thomas Spencer finished his prep career at the State Class C track and field championships. Spencer won the state championship in the high jump with a height of 6-4. The back-to-back state champion plans to continue high jumping at The University of Montana- Western.

Fall sports season 2011

Superior football

After finishing the regular season undefeated, Superior faced Ennis in the first round of the Class C playoffs and lost 34-27 to end the season.

Superior volleyball

Superior came into the divisional tournament undefeated with a conference championship, but they met their match at divisonals. Superior lost to Gardiner 3-1 in the first match and was eliminated by Harrison/Willow Creek 3-2 in the loser-out game.

Alberton football

The Panthers made school history beating Reed Point/Rapelje 41-32 in the first round of the Class C-six man playoffs, giving Alberton their first post season win ever. The next week, Geraldine knocked out the Panthers 32-24.

Alberton Volleyball

The Lady Panthers ended their season at the 9C District tournament after losing to Darby 3-0 and losing to Victor 3-2 in the loser-out game.

St. Regis Volleyball

The Lady Tigers finished their season at the 10C District Tournament. St. Regis first faced Arlee and lost 3-0. The loss put them against Hot Springs in the loser-out game. St. Regis lost to Hot Springs 3-0 and ended their season with nine returning players next year.

St. Regis football

The Tigers competed at the junior varsity level and finished 0-7. The Tigers return all but one player.
