Superior boys fall to Loyola

Superior finished out their regular season last week with a single game against Loyola. The boys lost 43-68 to the Rams, finishing the season 2-8, 2-16.

Against Loyola on Thursday, Superior fell behind early on in the first quarter by ten points, 8-18. Loyola had a huge run on them in the second as well, outscoring the Bobcats 24-11. The boys were down at the half 42-19.

“I thought it was a pretty good game,” Coach Bajin Smith said. “Loyola stacks up, of course, second in the district. They are a pretty good team.”

Superior played pretty evenly with Loyola in the second half, going 8-9 with them in the third and 16-17 in the fourth frame of the game.

“Our defense was working hard in the second half,” Smith said.

Smith said that they were also using the game against Loyola to try and work on their defensive and offensive measures to prep for their first district game on Wednesday against Deer Lodge.

“We’ll be playing Deer Lodge right out of the gate,” Smith said. “It’s going to be a short week of practice.”

Smith noted that Adam Kay, Zach Benda and Clint Voll, three of the team’s younger plays, stepped up against Loyola and played strongly. The team only has three seniors and so the younger kids have had to step up all season to fill in the gaps.

Smith also changed the offensive and defensive ends this season and said that the kids have handling it well.

“We’re pleased with what they’ve accomplished,” Smith said. “We’re looking forward to going to Hamilton.”

Deer Lodge is a team that Superior has lost to both times when they played them back during the regular season.

“The last game against them right there at the end we were tied at halftime so it was also a good fame. I’m excited about where we’re going and we have a couple of days to get ready, but the kids are excited,” Smith said.

Smith added that it would have been nice to get a few more wins in during the regular season, but now the team is going to focus on the post season and what they might be able to do.
