Cakewalk in Paradise

Paradise School held their annual winter carnival and cakewalk to raise money for their 8th grade graduation ceremony, last Thursday evening. Families and students participated in multiple rounds of the cakewalk, as well as games such as fishing, bowling and hopscotch.
The event raised about $240, which will go towards decorating the gym for the graduation ceremony along with a possible field trip for the four graduating eighth graders this spring. Money was also raised for this year’s graduating class, since there were no eighth graders at the school in 2010.
“If I could go anywhere on a class trip, it would probably be to Helena to see the capitol since I have never been there,” said Shailyne Portzen, 13, who is one of the eighth graders graduating.
There were about 50 people at the event who had the chance to win roughly 20 homemade, themed cakes ranging from candy topped cupcakes to Valentine’s Day hearts. Carnival goers also bid at a silent auction bake sale. All of the cakes and baked goods were donated and made by staff and parents.
“We recieved a lot more cakes than we had thought we would,” said Shana Smith, the sixth through eighth grade teacher at the school.
Paradise School is a Kindergarten through eighth grade school in Paradise, Montana with a total of 26 students.
