Lady Bobcats lose two close games
The Superior girls’ basketball team had two close games last week as they went up against Valley Christian and Deer Lodge. The girls lost to Valley by two, 44-46, and lost to Deer Lodge by three, 36-39.
Coach Jeff Schultz said that Valley Christian is a good squad that shoots and rebounds well. He said he felt that his girls played the team very well. The girls outscored Valley in every quarter except the first, which may have cost them the game.
“During that first quarter, we weren’t awake. It was like, ‘Oh, boy, this is a game all of sudden,’” he said. “We were coming back from Christmas break and you could see it. We were rough in the first. They just didn’t show that urgency that we normally have as we try to do a high paced, up tempo offense and defense. It just wasn’t there.”
After the first quarter though, the girls got back on the right page and gave Valley a run for their money. In the last two minutes of the game, the Lady Cats took the lead away from the Eagles, but they just weren’t able to hold onto it.
Schultz said that he thought the girls did well on blocking out and rebounding against Valley who is a taller team.
Kaitlynn Koke led with 11 points. Malinda Steinebach, Cary Chamberlain and Kelsey Stenberg each scored ten.
Next up, was Deer lodge. Schultz said that the game was opposite of the one against Valley. The girls came out really strong in the first quarter beginning the game with a 12-2 run. Schultz said that they were focusing on just focusing and getting the execution of defense and offensive plays down.
“We’re an extremely talented team, but I don’t think we understand how good we really are,” Schultz said.
Schultz said that Deer Lodge is the second best team in their conference and the girls nearly had them pinned down for a loss. But when they stop focusing on the tiniest details, that’s when they start having turnovers, they travel and aren’t as good at blocking out.
Koke and Ashley Blaylock each scored 13 points against Deer Lodge.
Next up, the girls play Alberton on Thursday at home. Schultz said that he expects it’s going to be tough.
