With thirteen years of experience, Kristi Scott opened her new business last week, Mineral County Hair Company. Her business partner, her six-year-old daughter Kassidi, was right by her side.

“She comes in here and sort of runs the joint with me,” Scott said. “She’s always like, ‘I’m going to be a salon doer like you.”

Scott said that doing hair was the last thing she expected she would wind up doing. She said that growing up, she was a tomboy and didn’t start wearing makeup or caring about such stuff until junior high.

“I actually wanted to go to school for forestry,” Scott said. “But I worked in a mill for a while and it wasn’t my thing. It wasn’t very stimulating.”

Scott said that one of her girlfriends told her at the time that she should look into going to cosmetology school because a lady in town was going to be selling her salon.

“I was like, ‘okay, I’ll check into it.’ So I went one day and thought, ‘why not give it a chance?’ And from day one, I was in love with it,” Scott said. “It was one of those things that happened out of nowhere, but one of the best things I’ve done.”

After graduating from the school, Scott ended up owning a salon for a while where she worked. She wanted to get back into education and so she headed back to school for three years and worked with KMS California.

“Working for them, I traveled around and taught at schools and salons. I taught product knowledge and styling, different things like that,” Scott said. “I traveled a lot as an educator, but I learned from the best in the industry.”

After she had her daughter, Scott stopped doing hair for eight months and then she moved into Superior back in August of last year.

“I took some time off again and then I heard through the grapevine that there was a spot down here,” she said.

The spot was the salon available across the river, next to Jackie’s Flowers and Gifts. The space was left by its former stylist pretty much as it is now. Scott made a couple of calls and decided to go ahead and set up shop. Last week, she had her first few appointments and opened her doors.

“I’m very passionate about hair. I love the business. I love being around people and making them happy,” she said. “I have a lot of respect for this business.”

Scott said she’s settling in and plans to do a little bit of painting as well as get her sign hung up. She said that she had her first few appointments by word of mouth and plans to start handing out cards and getting her name out there. She said that she’s a full service salon for the whole family. She said that personally she really enjoys cutting and coloring.

“Cutting and coloring are my strong points,” Scott said. “It’s just something I love to do. I love to get creative with people. I love cutting. I’m very particular and detailed about my cuts.”

Scott said that she is big on listening to clients as they know their hair best.

“I’m big on listening to them,” Scott said. “I love to communicate with my clients about what they want.”

From cuts to perms, to pedicures and manicures, Scott said she offers quite a range of services. Right now, she’s finishing up her business administration degree and hopes to possibly add facials afterwards and talked about doing artificial nails in the future. Walk-ins are always welcome and Scott said that she’s planning a grand opening celebration on Valentine’s Day and invited people to come and check out what she has to offer. She’s going to be doing some giveaway and Chandra Plakke will be there with Mary Kay.
