Lady Cats get pounced by Bigfork in divisionals

After finishing third at districts, the Lady Cats headed to Pablo for the divisional tournament. The girls played three teams during the tournament. It was a loss against Bigfork on Friday that ended their season.

The girls started out with a matchup against St. Ignatius on Wednesday. They had played the team once during the regular season and lost. Last week, they fell again to the team, losing 29-39.

Coach Jeff Schultz said that defensively the girls played a great game. He said that they struggled on offense and rushed some of their shots.

“Defensively it was an all around great game for us,” Schultz said. “We got them to turn the ball over repeatedly. We struggled from the floor on offense and we had trouble rebounding. We didn’t get a lot of second chances.”

Schultz said that he wondered if nerves might have had something to do with the team’s performance. He said that there were a lot of younger players on the court that hadn’t been to divisionals before.

“There was a lot of pressure and there were some nerves and that might have just been the case,” Schultz said.

On Thursday, the girls were placed into a loser out game against Troy. The Lady Cats weren’t about to let their time in the tournament come to an end. The girls pulled together to bear Troy, 54-30.

“They did very well,” Schultz said.

The girls pulled away from Troy early. Going into the second quarter, they were ahead 19-4.

“We came out and pounced on them,” Schultz said. “We sort of hit a cold spell in the second quarter though and struggled.”

The girls came back strong in the third quarter. In the final minutes of the third quarter, the girls put 15 points on the board and held Bigfork to zero.

“This was the first divisional win that Superior girls’ basketball had had in a while,” Schultz said. “It was an all around good game. The girls played well. It was nice.”
