PLAINS - Plains Volunteer Dept. and Plains-Paradise Rural Fire District made animal rescues last night when responding to a structure fire at Glacier Crossroads Lodging and RV Park located at 401 East Railroad.

Around 7:00 p.m., a trailer belonging to Robert Carolyn Mize in Plains caught on fire.

Mize was home alone with his two cats and one dog when the fire broke out. Mize made it out of the trailer with no serious injuries and the pets were later rescued by the members of the Plains Volunteer Fire Department.

Darcy Iverson was on the scene and was the one who dialed 911. Her husband Scott was one of the ambulance crew members that were on call and arrived on the scene to assist.

The Plains-Paradise Rural Fire District was the first to arrive on the scene with one engine, followed by the Plains Volunteer Fire Department, which also brought one engine. Within a half hour, as both departments worked together, the fire was extinguished.

This was the second structure fire of the calendar year for both fire departments, as both responded to the large structure fire a few weeks ago outside of Paradise that left a home completely destroyed.

According to Plains Volunteer Firefighter Joe Sheppard, the cause of the fire had not yet been determined by authorities but it was thought the fire most likely started from an electrical source.

“There was a small fire that started underneath [the trailer] and it spread from there,” said Sheppard.

Though their home is gone, the Mizes won’t be left in the cold as they have gotten temporary shelter from Church On The Move here in Plains.
