MINERAL COUNTY - Two Mineral County schools bid farewell to senior classes on Sunday during commencement ceremonies at Alberton and Superior High Schools.

In Alberton, the class of 2012 linked arms in groups of three and headed through the gym surrounded by friends and families who stood to watch.

Salutatorian Jake Thompson took the podium after a brief introduction by Principal Jim Baldwin. Thompson was not only a star athlete for the Panthers during his high school career - he also participated in drama and band.

“It’s a great honor to be here and on behalf of all of us I would like to welcome you to the graduation ceremony for the class of 2012,” Thompson said. “This class has a little bit of everything and together we make up one big family.”

Thompson continued his speech, talking about the importance of leadership to him throughout high school and the importance of being the person that you want to be.

“My advice to you guys is to find that person you want to be better for and be better for them,” Thompson said. After a rose ceremony, where seniors grabbed roses and headed into the crowd to give them to their mothers, scholarships were awarded and a brief slideshow showcasing the memories of the class of 2012 was shown before valedictorian Brian Hendrickson gave a speech to the graduates and attendees.

Finally it was time to hand out the diplomas, and the graduating Panthers were all smiles as they stood in front of the gym with the proof of their high school completion.

In Superior, the gym was packed to see the Bobcat class of 2012 walk through the gym for their commencement ceremony.

Valedictorian Cary Chamberlain and Salutatorian Kaitlynn Koke were introduced by Principal Allan Labbe before each of the lady Bobcats gave a speech to fellow classmates and attendees.

Scholarships were awarded by Labbe prior to a presentation of a video and photo slideshow that the class prepared for the event.

Before the diplomas were handed out, Labbe spoke to the class of 2012 and offered them advice as they continue on their journey through life.

“You see the keys to your success in life, in the real world, are: love, understanding and attitude,” Labbe said. “If you remember these three things you are going to succeed in life. Good luck and God bless all of you.”

With that, the eager seniors received their diplomas and were presented to their friends and families as the class of 2012.
