Bobcats earn a spot in championship game
SUPERIOR - For three straight weeks as the clock wound down at Superior Football field, several players snuck up on Head Coach Allen Labbe with a Gatorade pitcher filled with water in hand.
For three straight weeks, after three straight commanding playoff victories, with a smile on his face, Coach Labbe had that pitcher of water dunked on him.
Coach Labbe and his Bobcats are winning, and they are having fun doing it.
"Other than cold and wet, I mean I got to tell you that, probably one of the best parts of the whole thing for me is seeing all the old players come back," Coach Allen Labbe said. "Some of them I didn’t even recognize until I sat and looked at them. That’s a neat thing and its part of enjoying it. Just enjoying it and not getting stressed about winning or losing, just having fun. That’s what I try to convey to the kids."
On Saturday, the Bobcats met Drummond at home. The Trojans gave Superior its only loss of the season – but Coach Labbe made it clear that the semifinal game was not about vengeance.
"I told them this was not a revenge game," Coach Labbe said. "It was about coming out and playing to the best of your abilities, showcasing them."
The Bobcats responded to that and every single one of them showcased their abilities on Saturday.
"It’s a team game and all eight players played very well," Coach Labbe said. "As I am watching the video, everyone made big plays when they had too."
One of the biggest plays of the game came on special teams in the second quarter.
After Adam Kay’s 32-yard touchdown run, the Superior Bobcats lined up and converted on an onside kick attempt.
"We talked about it before the game," Coach Labbe said. "If we didn’t get it we would only be giving up about 10-yards since they are running the ball back every time."
After the touchdown, Coach Labbe said that he realized the Bobcat defense had held Drummond on the last three drives.
"If we give them the ball on the 40 so be it," Coach Labbe said.
The roll of the dice paid off for the Bobcats, who converted and then quickly scored another touchdown and gained all the momentum they needed for the victory.
In the second half Superior cruised to a victory and earned their spot at the championship game.
Coach Labbe said that one particular play on offense was good to see.
"Tanner Smith caught a nice pass," Coach Labbe said. "He’s a guard and it is always nice to see a linemen get juking out there."
On defense, Coach Labbe mentioned the work of linemen Alex Billet as well as Cole Karow – who along with their defensive teammates kept Dummond’s offense stumbling for traction.
"They took a guy this last weekend, just a wonderful kid and a great player, the quarterback from Drummond, who has basically run over everyone in every game they have played in and shut him down," Coach Labbe said.
Superior won 58-18.
