CAMAS PRAIRIE - An afternoon house fire filled the blue sky with billows of smoke in the Camas Prairie area Friday, Oct. 5 that teams of firefighters responded to from Dixon, Plains and Hot Springs.

The emergency call came in around 4 p.m. and Hot Springs Volunteer Fire Department  was first on the scene.

Soon after, Dixon Volunteer Fire Department was paged to the scene and dispatched an engine. Plains-Paradise Rural Fire District was also on hand and the crews worked together to supress the blaze, which consumed the first and second floors of the residence.

The resident, who did not want to be identitfied, said he thought his wood-burning stove was the cause of the fire.

“I just took a friend to the airport, and got back to this,” he said. “It was my house. I think it was my wood-burning stove I just put in last year. New chimney and all.”

The residence, which stood at 217 Michel Creek Rd, had been the home of the man for seven years.

DNRC and SCSO also assisted in the incident. They were able to put the fire out in a few hours, and then proceeded the “overhaul” process of sorting through debris and remains to ensure the fire was out totally.   No injuries were reported.
