Wildfire quickly extinguished in Superior
SUPERIOR - A small fire broke out in Superior Sunday evening along the train tracks on Southside Rd.
The fire was called in at 7 pm and both the Superior Volunteer Fire Department and Superior Ranger District firefighters responded to the scene.
“It was close so we were able to get there quickly,” Bob Derleth, Fire Management Officer with the Superior Ranger District, said. “The fire was located on the flat so it wasn’t moving too quickly. We got lucky that way.”
Derleth said the fire was approximately a quarter of an acre and was contained in less than two hours.
“We went back and checked it this morning,” Derleth said. “There were some small smoke piles but nothing major.”
Ranger District firefighters went back Monday afternoon to once again check on the fire and make sure it was completely extinguished.
Derleth added that no evidence as to the cause of the fire was found on site but since there was no lightning at the time of the blaze it is probable there is “some kind of human cause.”
The fire is the twentieth the Superior Ranger District has responded to this season. Derleth said the average is normally around 50 wild fires in the area and there is really no way to predict how heavy the season will be.
“It’s just kind of random,” Derleth said. “We’ve had seriously hot weather and lightning but not too many fire starts.”
