MCPAC hosts the Piatigorsky Foundation

In one of the final Mineral County Performing Arts Council events of the year at the Superior Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on April 9, Soprano Katharine Dain and Pianist Jeffrey Grossman from the Piatigorsky Foundation played a selection of songs with a common theme – love, specifically how love can make one feel temporarily insane.

The duo chose to perform together and is currently on tour throughout the United States for the foundation, whose goal is to “make live classical music part of the fabric of everyday life for communities.”

“We just have such a great time performing,” Dain said to attendees at the concert.

The two self described “music nerds” knew each other during their undergraduate studies and both pursued music professionally.

Grossman joined the Piatigorsky Foundation and during an impromptu audition during a New Year’s Eve party, Dain was also asked to join.

Unusual for an MCPAC performance was the lack of intermission during the hour-long performance that featured musical selections from all over the world.

“We want to just leave you spellbound the whole time,” Dain said.

The included set list in the program served as “mostly a suggestion” for the hour-long trip through musical history and the variety of pieces – ranging from modern Broadway hits to classics from Italy and Germany.

Throughout the performance the audience was treated to excellent vocals and flawless piano playing. The two delivered on their promise and left the audience completely spellbound during the show.

The next MCPAC event will be on August 21 at the Superior Fairgrounds with Shakespeare in the Park.
