Coeur d'Alene Diamond Cup to be held this weekend

COEUR D’ALENE - The Diamond Cup and H1 Unlimited Hydroplane racing return to Lake Coeur d’Alene Labor Day weekend. The Diamond Cup is the seventh stop on the H1 Hydroplane Circuit. Drivers and teams from all over the country will be battling for the National High Point Championship on one of the fastest race courses H1 has to offer.

The sanctioned race will be located along Coeur d’Alene’s Lakeshore Drive in the Silver Beach area. This first year event looks to draw 70,000-90,000 spectators over the three-day period.

Spectators can park at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds, where shuttle buses will take them to and from the Silver Beach area on a constant cycle throughout the day.

Bleachers, vendors and restrooms will be set up along Coeur d’Alene Lake Drive.

Visitors can see the boats free of charge during testing and qualifying runs on Friday, Aug. 30. Races are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Individual heats will be three laps and final races will be five laps. Each lap is two miles.

The Vintage Unlimited and Vintage Limited boats of years past will appear for exhibition races throughout the weekend.
