PLAINS – Eager children and parents filled the hallways of the Plains schools, foreshadowing the beginning of school on Monday, August 26 for the annual Plains School Open House.

The halls, which stood almost empty for three months, filled again as students scurried along to their newly assigned lockers, filling them with supplies. As they picked up their class schedules that would begin in full swing shortly, the kids made their way to their teacher’s classrooms, getting the lay of the land.

Desks stood ready layered with books and papers for the incoming students and happy teachers waited to greet their new students.

The open house took place on Thursday, August 22 and Elementary School Principal Jim Holland said the event went well.

The Plains School District has held an open house for as long as Holland can remember, however, this was the second year the event was held before the start of the school year.

“We thought it would be more effective if kids and their parents got to go through the routine before school started, answering any questions or settling any nerves about where they’re kids are going to be, who their teacher is and the flow of the day,” said Holland.

Younger kids were more prominent during the open house than high school aged kids, the newbies excited to continue a chapter in their life that will lead many to endless possibilities.

“It was great. We had lots of kids and lots of parents,” said Holland. “We got a chance to meet some new families that have moved into the district.”

The open house calmed the nerves of many anxious kids and parents, while also exciting the ones who were highly anticipating the start of the school year.
