Mayor Brinson participates in his last town council meeting

PLAINS – Mayor Michael Brinson presided over his last town council meeting as mayor on Monday, December 2. The meeting was kept short and straight to the point. The council approved the minutes of both the special and regular meeting and moved on to reports.

Plains City Fire Chief Joe Sheppard gave his report and stated the department had been called out two times in the last month. The first call was for a structure fire up Henry Creek, where a shop burned down and the other one was a supposed gas leak at the Plains Senior Center.

Once old business was taken care of, Tony Banovich spoke to the council on behalf of Plains Public Schools. He stated the school was adding an elementary addition and he discussed the plans for the new building to get both sewer and water.

He proposed for the school to do the installation. With all the work falling into their hands, the town hook up fee would be avoided and the school would just need to pay for the new water meter. The council unanimously approved the measure.

Committee reports were then heard as each gave an update as to their meetings in the last month.

The Public Works Committee presented some problems citizens had with their accounts, which were all resolved. Carl Reeb discussed the issue of intersections being unmarked. Because of this, cars turning on and off of Highway 200 often cut into the other lane, especially if a truck is being driven. It was proposed the town paint new lines for now and increase police enforcement to see how that looks. No decision was made on the matter.

Once the meeting wrapped to a close, Mayor Brinson thanked everyone for the past eight years.

“I will say its been a pleasure. I’ve enjoyed myself – some (things have been) fun, some haven’t been fun,” said Mayor Brinson. “But overall everything has gone real well with the council and myself. A lot has been accomplished in the last eight years with everyone’s help. I appreciate you guys.”

With his final sign off and his last town council meeting complete, the council and everyone in attendance applauded Mayor Brinson, helping to send him on his way.
