PLAINS – Twenty-nine veterans will be provided with Christmas packages this year courtesy of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.

The ladies came together with the community to bring Christmas to those veterans who could not return home or for those veterans who were alone for the holidays.

According to volunteer Meralise Nass, several packages went to veterans in Columbia Falls, Dixon and Plains.

The packages were mailed out on Monday and the entire process took about 45 minutes.

Although the number was down from last year, Nora Verpoorten said that isn’t necessarily a bad sign.

“The number was down from last year but it could be a good thing. Maybe there aren’t as many veterans in need and more of them are going to be coming home,” explained Verpoorten.

Last year the club sent 51 packages. Verpoorten said the club could send up to ten more if addresses were provided.

“I can’t guarantee when the packages will get there but we will mail them out,” said Verpoorten.

Overall, the event was called a success.

“Anytime we can help veterans, it’s successful,” said Verpoorten.
