ST. REGIS – The first meal in the new St. Regis Senior Center was pushed to the start of January 2014, due to delays with the last parts of the building’s construction.

As of the anticipated move in date on Thursday, December 19, final touches were still in need of completion. The small projects would need to be completed before the opening date.

“Just a bunch of little things that they need to do, before we can use the kitchens,” said Mary Burrows, one of the center’s organizers.

At the time of the interview, all but one of the projects were finished. Burrows did not know what work still needed to be completed. According to Burrows, the final item was scheduled to be completed later in the week. However, the center was not scheduled to open until the start of the year.

The leadership of the center plans to wait until after the holidays to get set up in the new building and begin to serve the community. Burrows said the holidays would cause too much of a rush. The new center will open for its first meal at the start of the new year, with a grand opening planned for later in the month.

The first meal was scheduled for Thursday, January 2, at noon. There will also be a grand opening and dedication, which will also include a meal, on Thursday, January 16, at 1:30 p.m.

The grand opening will feature a cake, coffee, punch, tours of the new building and information about what the center offers. Burrows hinted there was a special plan for the dedication, but would not give more details.

Burrows hoped the community would get involved with the new center and take advantage of its services.

“I hope the community will take part in what we do offer,” said Burrows.

Burrows invited the community to give suggestions about what to offer at the new center. She said suggestions would be considered and, if possible, put into effect.
