County commissioners look to bring new businesses to Mineral County

With 14 percent unemployment in Mineral County, county commissioners are exploring new ways to bring outside businesses in.

During the public comment portion of the Feb. 22 meeting of the Mineral County Commissioners, Commissioner Laurie Johnston read a Denver Post article regarding an ammunition company, Magpul, which is considering leaving Colorado if the state’s proposed gun control initiatives pass.

“I just think maybe as a commission we could send a letter that says ‘hey bring your business here,’” Commissioner Johnston said. “We have 14 percent unemployment and we need something. This is a business that is possibly relocating so why not send them a letter?”

The Denver Post article states that three other states – Idaho, Texas and South Carolina – have all contacted Magpul about relocating the business to their states should Colorado pass gun control initiatives.

Commissioner Johnston added that with Sheriff’s throughout the state making public statements regarding their opposition to proposed national gun control initiatives, Montana would be an “ideal” location for the company to relocate.

“Why not jump in the pool,” Commissioner Johnston said.

The county commissioners were in agreement about sending Magpul a letter, which would place Mineral County on the list of places the company could relocate.
