At the February meeting of the Superior Town Council on Feb. 11, councilors unanimously approved a 3.7 percent pay increase for Superior Town Judge Wanda James and Superior Volunteer Fire Chief John Woodland.

According to the official minutes from the meeting, Judge James currently makes $727.00 per month and the pay increase will bring her monthly salary to $754.00. Chief Woodland currently makes $1465.00 per month and will now receive $1519.00 as a monthly salary.

The increase in salary is the same as stipulated in the town’s pay matrix, which determines the annual rate of salary increase for its employees.

Councilor Angelo Ververis was absent for the meeting and the other five present councilors all cast votes in favor of the increase.

In other business of the town council, the annual community clean-up day was discussed and a motion was made by Councilor Nolan Webber to set the clean-up day for June 8. The motion passed unanimously and clean-up day will once again take place on June 8.

Superior Mayor Michael Wood read the Superior Volunteer Fire Department report for January, which reported no emergency calls for the month.

The Superior Volunteer Fire Department held one training meeting on Jan. 15.

Craig Jeppson conducted the training session, which focused on fire behavior – particularly the impact of ventilation on fire traveling through a structure.

“There has been some significant change in this area as a result of some recent controlled experimentation,” Mayor Wood read.

Ten members of the Superior Volunteer Fire Department attended the training.

Mayor Wood also read that the department has received the “first couple” of propane bills for the new fire hall. Propane is used at the hall for both heat and hot water and while it is still early “these bills appear to be running well under what it cost to heat our previous location.”

The town council also discussed the lighting at the fire hall.

“A couple of complaints were received about the lighting being on all night,” the minute’s state. “The lights inside are wired to stay on all night for easier access to the building when volunteers enter the building in the middle of the night. The lights do go to half light at night.”

The next meeting of the Superior Town Council will take place on March 11 at 7:30.
