Bobcat basketball faces off with fellow powerhouse Arlee

After a big win over county rival Alberton early in the week, the Superior Bobcat basketball squad headed to Arlee to take on the Warriors.

The result was what Head Coach Chris Toivonen called a “classic contest” between to powerhouse teams.

At half, the Bobcats trailed by eight-points but grabbed momentum in the fourth quarter – coming back to take a 41-38 lead with close to three minutes left.

“After we just missed on a three-point attempt, Arlee’s Zach Camel drove to the hoop and drew a blocking foul on Bill Smith that was loudly questioned by the Superior faithful,” Coach Toivonen said.

Camel drained his two free throws to bring Arlee within one of the lead prior to the Warriors forcing a turnover and grabbing a three-pointer to gain control.

The Bobcats weren’t out of it yet though and on their next offensive possession, Zach Benda elevated to grab a rebound to give Superior another chance at snagging the win in the final seconds of the fourth.

“Unfortunately, Arlee’s Josh Reed also had his hands on the ball and a jump was ruled,” Coach Toivonen said.  “Arlee had the possession arrow and the Bobcats were forced to foul.  Arlee then sank two free throws and time ran out on Superior.”

Superior lost 47-43, however Coach Toivonen said he was “extremely proud” of how his squad performed against a “talented” Arlee team.  

“Arlee had a great atmosphere for the game with a loud and virtually packed gym,” Coach Toivonen said.  “I am hoping we can fill our place this week for our games versus Thompson Falls on Thursday night and Hot Springs on Saturday.”
