Driver course for local senior citizens offered in area through AARP

| January 30, 2013 9:17 AM

News articles and editorials raise concerns about older drivers on increasingly busy streets and highways. Recent statistics show older adults are safe drivers with good driving records. As baby boomers reach retirement age, by 2030 the 65-plus population will make up a quarter of U.S. drivers.

Age is not the issue. Physical and mental fitness are the important elements in the ability to drive. Physical changes occurring with age are gradual, and medications often have side effects that put the driver at risk. It is becoming a problem with all ages and COMMUNICATION while driving is also a problem. More and more drivers do not signal their intent to turn, posing a problem for other drivers. When driving in inclement weather or at dusk and sunrise, drivers need to have the headlights on with tail lights so other drivers can see vehicles much quicker.

One of the important steps that we can take to improve our driving ability is to be aware of changes we face and then learn to adapt to them. That is where a driver refresher class, such as the AARP Driver Safety Class can help you.

Spring class schedule as follows:

Plains Senior Center March 05 Call 826-4707 or Sr.Ctr 826-3018

Thompson Falls Senior Center March 13 Call 827-4735

This nationwide program highlights the most important information to help maintain safety behind the wheel. The classroom refresher is open to any licensed driver regardless of age and people over 55 who complete the course are eligible for multi-year discounts on their automobile insurance. Some insurance companies may give a discount to 50 year old drivers. Call your insurance agent about your discount.

Active group discussions, video presentations, and a workbook, answer such questions as: How does the aging process affect my driving? When am I expected to yield the right-of-way? How can I avoid a confrontation with an aggressive driver? What is the safest way to make a left turn at an intersection? How have traffic laws and rules of the road changed? Questions are encouraged and the experiences of the participants enliven the discussions. Classes are also scheduled next fall at Plains Senior Center November 05, call 826-4707 or Senior center 826-3018 and Thompson Falls Senior Center November 13, call 827-4735.
