PLAINS - The Horsmen basketball team has proven itself to be a scrapper squad with the win and almost-win this past weekend, and more tough games are coming their way.

On Friday, Jan. 25, the Horsemen were away at Deer Lodge and according to head coach Russ Baker, fought the good fight that nearly put them into overtime.

“They probably had their best game of the season on Friday, but lost,” Coach Baker said. “What got us was, Kyle Revier hit a two-pointer just before the buzz, and the refs called the shot no good, they said it didn’t leave his hands on time. So, that would’ve put us in overtime. They still played great.”

On Saturday, the Horsemen were at home and faced the Eureka Lions. They defeated the Lions with a messy 47-43.

“I think they were worn out from Friday’s game,” Coach Baker said. “It was ugly, but it was a win. I’d rather them play an ugly game and get a win, than play pretty and lose.”

Coach Baker then commented on the stand-out player of the game, senior Jeremiah Crawford.

“Jeremiah made a couple of nice ones down the stretch, and his points towards the end there are what kept the game away from them [the Lions],” he said.

Crawford led in scoring with 16 points. Teammate Aaron Baker followed with 13, Kyle Revier put in 12, while Dallas Burgess and Wyatt Winebrenner each gave three.

“We missed 17 foul shots, that wasn’t outstanding,” Coach Baker said.

Next up for the Horsemen will be an anticipated match-up with county rival Thompson Falls Bluehawks on Thursday. The game will be at Thompson Falls, and the two teams have not played each other since the first week of January. Both teams have gained more experience since then, and both teams will be gunning for the win.

“I anticipate it’s going to be a tough game,” Baker said. “But, we’re at full strength now, and we were missing some starters last time we played [T-Falls]. We also know what their strengths and weaknesses are, and we’re just going to play tough.”
