Contests, theater at 34th Huckleberry Festival

TROUT CREEK - This year’s Huckleberry Festival in Trout Creek is rapidly approaching, and the weekend will include both old favorites and new events to keep festival attendees entertained.

New activities include a performance by the Idaho Puppet Theater on Friday at 5:00 p.m., called “Lookin for a Home.” Puppets include a huckleberry-eating bear in search of a place to live, and the show will entertain the young and the young at heart. Sunday’s performance, at 2:30 p.m., will be an original production of “Snow White” by the Pitiful Players from Libby, Montana.

Contests and competitions will highlight all three days of the Festival, with information and entry forms available on the festival website, at www.huckleberryfestival.com, or by calling 827-5077 for more information:

• Logo Design Competition: entries for the 2014 Festival logo and T-shirt design are due by Friday, August 9, 2013. Winning entry receives $100 prize and recognition.

• Miss Huckleberry Pageant: girls from 5 to 15 will demonstrate talent and personality in the selection of this year’s Tiny Miss, Little Miss, and Miss Huckleberry competition. Contact Jen Frields at 827-1431, for more information.

• Huckleberry Festival Parade: this year’s parade theme is “Huckleberry Goes Green,” with extra points awarded to parade entries, which feature environmental responsibility. Winning entries for best car, truck, bicycle, single, group, equestrian, most humorous, best pooper scooper, and best float will all receive trophies, with best overall entry receiving a cash prize of $100.

• Huckleberry Jams, Jellies and Desserts: Saturday afternoon features the jam and jelly competition, and Sunday afternoon closes the festival with the annual dessert competition, with prizes and honors to the winners. All entries must include huckleberries. Entrants of all ages are encouraged.

• Homesteaders’ Pentathlon, Horseshoes, and Dog Agility Competition: Pentathlon contestants compete for prizes and glory in old-time skills like nail hammering, airsoft shooting, water pumping, log sawing, and fishing lure casting. Competition takes place from noon to 3:00 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday. Horseshoes takes place on Sunday afternoon beginning at 1:00 p.m., with participants competing for a trophy and bragging rights. The Dog Agility Competition is held Saturday afternoon, with a demonstration scheduled to begin Sunday at 11:30 a.m.

• Second annual Pie-eating Contest: Last year’s first ever pie eating contest was a huge success. Back this year by popular demand, sign-ups are expected to fill fast, and the contest will be first-come, first served. Winners will receive half of the proceeds.
