Yard sales take over Sanders County
SANDERS COUNTY – Trucks, trailers and cars could be spotted loaded to the brim with bargains and great deals during the county-wide yard saleing event.
The event took place on Friday and Saturday with over 70 registered sales throughout the county. The sales could be found up along Highway 200, stretching from Noxon to Paradise and also Hot Springs.
Jen Kreiner with Sanders County Community Development explained the number of sales was more than 70, with “sales within sales within sales.” Many multi-family sales could be seen throughout the county.
Kreiner explained the event helps bring tourists into the area.
“I think the way we need to look at this event is it’s drawing in visitors outside of the county to really have a stimulating weekend for the businesses in those communities,” said Kreiner.
As people scoured the sales for something they would treasure, many struck good deals along the way.
Friday seemed to be the busier day, a common consensus heard from many of those hosting the sales.
One lady who hosted her sale at a storage unit on River Road East said Friday was really busy and Saturday just didn’t compare.
“It was very busy yesterday, just crazy and today is quite a bit slower. Considerably slower,” said the lady, who credited the auction and the ongoing services that day as the reason for the lull.
Kiyha Brost said people from all over came to their sale, including someone from California, Polson and Spokane. A few ladies even came from Helena with a horse trailer to fill with bargains.
“They said if they were going to drive this far, they better be prepared to take whatever they wanted back,” said Brost with a laugh.
The Church on the Move also hosted a sale, raising funds for the preschool. The preschool has been operating for three years and the money raised went for supplies and scholarships for the kids.
“(The preschool is very successful thanks to Tifini (Saner) who is an excellent instructor,” said Judy Hulmes.
Another volunteer at the event said the sale had been successful on Friday and they began clearing out more merchandise on Saturday.
“We definitely have sold at least half of what we had yesterday,” said Amy Weeks on Saturday.
The sale was full of donations from others and the asking price were also donations, with nothing marked with a price.
Kim Knudson held a sale on Miners Lane and said business was “brisk” on Friday. Although, she did state they did not clear out as much as they wanted to.
Plains Physical Therapy also held a one-day sale on Saturday to raise money for their Relay for Life team.
“We started around 8 a.m. It’s not as big as last year but we’ve had a lot of people,” said Sandy Thompson.
The trio of ladies working the sale said this would be their fourth year participating in Relay for Life and all the proceeds go towards their team.
Regardless of why people were selling their stuff, whether it was to raise funds for a cause or to clear some of the clutter out of their homes, shoppers throughout the county left sales with their hands full. After all, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.
