Bobcats continue to dominate summer competition

The Superior Bobcats had another solid week of summer basketball – going 2-0 on Tuesday night at home and 2-1 on Saturday in Thompson Falls. Charlo and Victor came to town Tuesday night and the Bobcats began the two game evening with a convincing victory over Charlo followed by a blowout win against Victor.

“Tuesday’s games went well as we notched two wins,” Head Coach Chris Toivonen said. “Welshed probably our best game this summer agents Victor as we shot extremely well, shared the ball and were solid defensively.”

Wyatt Zylawy and Tucker Smith were lethal from behind the arc during both games – with Zylawy going five-for-five and Smith draining four three-pointers.

“Our two posts had solid nights as well. Clint Voll upped his game against Victor on both ends of the floor and rebounded extremely well,” Coach Toivonen said. “Jarrod Tippens had another great night defensively. He is quickly becoming an outstanding help defender.”

Coach Toivonen also mentioned the efforts of Aaron Kelly – who came off the bench and grabbed eight rebounds while providing the starters with much needed rest.

On Saturday, the Bobcats played a trio of games against Thompson Falls, Florence and Kellogg – starting things off against the host Bluehawks.

Superior led for the entirety of the game but Thompson Falls kept it close and at the last second the Bluehawks were able to grab a narrow 29-27 victory by grabbing a steal and a lay-up.

The boys rebounded against Florence in the next game due to strong perimeter play and utilizing the two senior post players, Tippens and Voll, to take command of the game offensively. Voll and Tippens combined for 26-points and the Bobcats won 46-22.

“Tanner Smith did an outstanding job attacking the rim and drawing fouls,” Coach Toivonen added. “He also had several nice assists. Josh Benda led our fast break attack as he made a couple easy baskets in transition by beating the defense down the floor.”

In the final game of the week the Bobcats went head to head with Kellogg and dominated the game from start to finish.

Tucker Smith was shooting lights out from the get go and made three shots from downtown – including the always rare four-point play.

“His outstanding shooting put us in the lead and great passing and defense kept us in front,” Coach Toivonen said. “Vicente Guerrero was especially active defensively and did a great job disrupting their offense. Wyatt Zylawy had several outstanding passes and Clint Voll chipped in with some great shots and rebounds. Jarrod Tippens was great again defensively. Aaron Kelly chipped in with several big offensive rebounds.”
