PLAINS- Football teams from Mission, Hot Springs and Plains met at the football field at Plains High School to scrimmage and run drills in preparation for the upcoming fall season. The teams took turns on defense and offense, practicing running and throwing the ball into the end-zone.

The teams gathered as part of an effort to brush up on skills during the off-season. Plains Head Coach Juan Lulack said the effort was intended to keep athletes in shape and help new players get used to the game. The players were not involved in full-contact play although pads and helmets were worn.

“We are trying to use the tools we have to build up our offense this year,” said Lulack. “This is a good way to get guys to practice during the summer. It helps get the guys ready for the fall season.”

Lulack, in his first year as head coach, said the practice provided teams from around the region an opportunity to face off and see what type of competition they might face in the upcoming football season.

“This game is not going to be full contact. We don’t want anyone getting hurt,” said Lulack. “No one wants to see an injury of any kind but it will allow them to come out, get loosened up and get a feel for the season.”

Lulack said the team will have around 20 players for the 2013-2014 football season. He said the team will be focusing on improving their offense aided by returning veterans he has watched play for several years.
