SANDERS COUNTY – A forest fire lit up 10 acres in Dunn’s Draw in Sanders County on Sunday after a tire fell off a trailer and ignited a dry slope.

According to Assistant Fire Management Officer, Lorie Cotter, the vehicle’s axle drug on the highway until the motorist could stop, sending sparks onto a steep, dry south slope.

The fire created by the sparks ran up the slope.

“It’s been uncommonly hot, dry and windy for the first part of June,” said Cotter. “It’s very good conditions for (the fire) to take off.”

Local volunteer firefighters as well as Superior Ranger District and the Lolo Hot Shots fire crew responded to the fire.

The blaze was contained and the Superior Ranger District will continue to monitor it until they are able to “call it out.”

The fire occurred in Sanders County but was inside of the Superior Ranger District’s fire protection area.
