Superior town council receives EPA Superfund update

Representatives from the Environmental Protection Agency met with the Superior Town Council on June 10 to discuss EPA Superfund activities.

According to official minutes provided by Town Clerk Brenda Schneider, EPA Project Manager Kris Edwards reported that there was no funding for any projects to remedy the superfund in Superior.

“The funding for the remedial work to be done in Superior was approved as long as the work could be completed in one year,” Edwards reported to the council. “EPA is currently working with the state of Montana to complete the Superfund site. They are working to have the contract completed and signed by the middle to the end of June.”

EPA Representative Duc Nguyen fielded questions regarding the cleanup work that will take place this year.

“Nguyen reported that the dirt from the temporary repository at the airport will be moved to the permanent repository at Wood Gulch,” minutes from the meeting read. “EPA will be using the same contractors as before but will try to use local firms as much as possible. The work should start in July and be completed by November.”

Nguyen also discussed the permanent repository at Wood Gulch, stating the Montana Department of Environmental Quality will have “primary responsibility” for the repository.

Institutional controls will also be set up when the project is completed in order to identify who to call if digging utility lines or basements. The controls will identify proper procedures to be used for testing and taking dirt to the repository.
