Annual Turkey Shoot kicks off with a bang

PLAINS – The annual Turkey Shoot kicked-off with a blast as guns fired into the air at clay pigeons.
The Plains Trap Club hosted their annual shoot and organizer Cookie Kunzer said although the turnout was lower than usual, they were pleased with the outcome.
“It turned out very well considering the weather,” said Kunzer.
Thirty-five participants showed up in hopes of winning frozen turkeys, ham or bacon.
The Turkey Shoot had 34 squads of five men, slowly eliminating the participants one-by-one until a winner of each group was announced.
Numerous times, there was a tie, meaning that more than one participant shot the same amount of clay pigeons. In that case, the shooters competed in a tiebreaker round, finding the best shooters of the bunch.
The Turkey Shoot also had three Annie Oakleys, where the shooters got in a line and shot in a sequence. If a shooter missed the bird and the next person down the line hit it, that person was disqualified from the round.
There were also two Buddy Shoots.
“It went very nice. I’m very happy for all the volunteers that helped out and for Jim Foster cooking lunch for us,” said Kunzer.
Lunch consisted of sloppy joes and hot dogs.
Kunzer explained the event could not have been successful without the help of the volunteers.
Volunteers from the Plains Trap Club and participants from all over pitched in and lent a helping hand to ensure everything ran smoothly.
