Superior student wins essay contest

Clark Fork Valley Elks Lodge #2757 is pleased to announce the following winners of the Americanism Essay Contest for 2012-13. The theme this year was “What does the National Anthem mean to me?

In Division I, which came from essay’s submitted by fifth and sixth graders, Kyler Francis of Superior Elementary School took second place.

The Lodge received approximately 80 entries from schools from Superior to Trout Creek. The essays were submitted for consideration the first part of January and were scored by a team from the Elks shortly thereafter. Each essay was read and scored at least three times by the team. They were judged on their compliance with essay rules. The team used the judging criteria of originality, development of theme and mechanics and neatness.

This past week the Chairman of the Americanism Essay Contest for the Elks, Bill Kenyon and his wife Brynn made visits to the schools to handout certificates of participation to all who entered the contest. At the same time the winners were announced and recognized.

Invitations were issued to all winners as well as the runner-ups to compete in an Oratorical Contest with their essay at the Elks Lodge on April 17. The runners up are as follows: Division I, Emma E. Hopwood of Superior, Faith Rebich of Superior and Robert Bonney of Trout Creek. Division II Kelsey Peters-Dawson of Thompson Falls and Peyton Irvine also of Thompson Falls.

This annual Oratorical event is judged by the local Toastmasters organization and checks/cash awards will be awarded at that time. $75 for first place, $50 for second place and $25 for third place. Dinner is also served to the winners, their families, friends and teachers.

It is quite an event.
