The music department at Thompson Falls High School was decked out in costume for a rousing performance on Tuesday in the gym. The “nerds versus jocks” themed event included the choir, jazz combo and band directed by Rebecca Haag and Jennifer Haas with accompaniment from Haag on piano.

With the jocks dressed up in football uniforms and sunglasses and the nerds decked out in Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings inspired outfits, the groups performed music from both of the popular movie series.

The jazz combo comprised of students from the larger school band performed “My Funny Valentine” and “Witchcraft” before handing over the stage to the choir. The choir sang “May It Be” from Lord of the Rings and “In Noctem” and “Double Double, Toil and Trouble” from the Harry Potter movie series.

The larger high school band followed up the choir with performances of music from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and the Half Blood Prince. The group also performed selections from Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and The Return of the King.

The band and the choir joined together for the finale that featured a variety of “jock” inspired music including “Championship” and the theme music from the National Football League. They ended the performance with a rendition of “Into the West” from Lord of the Rings.

Accompanist and co-director Rebecca Haag said the event was a great success.

“They performed very well and they definitely had a lot of fun,” said Haag.
