It is not too soon to begin planning for the Mineral County Fair in August.

The fair board members were doing just that as they met last Wednesday night, May 15, to consider the progress made so far. Carole Johnson, board chairman, apprised the other members that the Kelly Hughes Band will again perform on Saturday night, Aug. 3. Other entertainment during the fair will include encores by Copper Mountain, the Fred Fike Family Band and Good and Plenty, she said, adding that she is working on getting other acts for the event. And, of course, the Superior Lions Club will once again host the two-night “Go For the Gold” Rodeo at the grounds.

Previously Jan Neville announced there will be barrel racing on Thursday with more information on it as it becomes available. That same night, the Lions will also feature Wild Cow Milking in the arena.

The Cabin Fever Quilt group will again host its annual show in conjunction with the fair in the high school multipurpose room. This year’s theme is “Places of the Heart” and the quilts created by the group’s members will be on display on Friday and Saturday.

The Methodist Men will host their pancake breakfast Wednesday-Saturday, July 31 through Aug. 3, on the green. All but two of the food booths have been rented. Any non-profit organization may rent a booth for vending to the public during the fair as a fund-raiser. Please contact Rachael Koke at the Superior Ranger District for more information and the food choices available. Koke is also handling the 4-H Building, furnishings and grounds rentals, the rates for which will be re-evaluated at the next board meeting on Wed., June 19 at the fairgrounds.

And, as always, there will be 4-H and open class exhibits at the fair. Work is now being done on the fair book which lists the exhibiting procedures for open class exhibitors. The board is looking at early en-rollment of open class livestock exhibits, asking for at least two weeks notice from exhibitors who are planning to show large animals. The board plans to set down the necessary requirements about this process at the June meeting.

Mineral County residents may now be considering nominations for the Fair Lady and parade marshals. Nominations may be made to any fair board member who will bring the suggestions to the board for consideration.

A theme for the fair has not been chosen but it will by next meeting, and that theme will be used for the parade as well.

The parade will be set up at Superior Paint and Lumber in uptown Superior and travel through town to the fairgrounds on Sat., Aug. 3 at times to be announced.
