Sanders County track teams gear up for state

Wet conditions did not keep the Plains and Thompson Falls track and field teams from posting some solid results on May 17 at the Western B divisional meet in Missoula.

Hot Springs had some strong showings from their team at the class C divisional meet held at the same location.

The Thompson Falls boys team won the event with a score of 107 while the Plains girls team won their side of the meet with a score 139.

For the Bluehawks, Preston Schubert led the way, winning the 400-meter race, the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 40.27 seconds and posting a season best height of 6 feet 4 inches in the high jump.

Dominique Holt won the pole vault with a mark of 14 feet even, placed third in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 41.18 seconds and took second in the high jump. Holt also placed in the 300 meter hurdles, 110 meter hurdles and the 4x10.

Other Thompson Falls athletes headed to state are Tanner Laws for his performance in the 3200; Dylan Vaught in the 200 meter, 4X100, 4X400 and 100 meter; Trais Hoisington in the 400, 4x100 and 4x400; Logan Naegeli in the 1600 and 3200; Kolt Shaw in the javelin; Ryan Knutson in the 4x100; Preston Schubert in the 300 meter hurdles, pole vault, 100 meter hurdles, 400, 4x400 and the high jump; Braxton Eubanks in the shot put; Dalton Nelson for the 4x400 and Tyler Riffle for the 4x400.

For the Lady Hawks, Hope Reid had a stellar meet placing first in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet even and set a meet record in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.07 seconds. That time is the best of the season for class B track and field.

Reid tied her season best mark in the pole vault with a mark of 11 feet even. Reid also placed in the 300 meter hurdles and the 200.

Allison Vaught placed in shot put, discus and javelin; Shasta Wilson and Logan Beckman in the javelin; Shey Hannum in the 300 hurdles, triple jump, and high jump; and Angela Padden in the pole vault.

The Trotters of Plains won the meet with help from the usual suspects. Carley VonHeeder won the javelin with a heave of 121 feet 4.75 inches.

Nicole Rehbein took second in the 100-meter race with a time 13.16 seconds and also placed fourth in the 200-meter dash.

Hailey Phillips won the 300-meter hurdles, the 400-meter race, the long jump and placed second in the 200-meter race.

The 1600-meter relay took second place at the meet and in throwing events, Kayla Holmes placed third in the discus and Ashley Holmes took third in the javelin.

For the Plains boys team, Ben Gorham won the discus with a toss of 144 feet 1 inch. Wyatt Winebrenner placed third in the javelin and the discus.

The top six finishers in each event will advance to the state meet in Bozeman that begins on Friday.

The boys team from Hot Springs placed third in the class C divisional meet in Missoula with a score of 57.

David Cross won the shot put with a heave of 47 feet 2.75 inches and Anthony Byrns won the 200-meter race with a time 23.45 seconds.

The top five finishers will advance to the class C state meet that begins Friday in Laurel.

A few athletes from the Noxon Red Devils track and field team are headed to state. Bradey Wilson took fourth place in the 1600, Neal Jopling took sixth in the 200 with 24.01 and he also took fifth in the long jump with 19-5. Casey Chenoweth took third in the shot put with 11.5. The three athletes will be in Laurel on May 24 to 25 to participate in the competition.

State qualifiers from Hot Springs include Tanner Hoff in the javelin, Dave Cross in the shot put and 1600-meter relay, Mike Gray in both the 1600 and 400-meter relay, Wyatt Nagy in the triple jump and relays, Jimmy Holland in the 1600-meter relay, Anthony Byrns in the 100, 200 and 400-meter relay, Jarod White in the triple jump, Meara Schmiedbauer in the javelin. Relay alternates are Lane Foster and Pavol Zahora.

Plains state qualifiers included: Ashley Holmes, l;eah Thompson, Kayla Holmes, Demi Horton, Felicia Earhart, Hailey Phillips, Carley VonHeeder, Nicole Rehbein, Kimberly Earhart, Shannon Dimond, Abbie Ehret, Russell Kujala, Ben Gorham and Wyatt Winebrenner.
