Student award ceremony held outside at PHS

PLAINS- Plains High School faculty honored student achievers on Monday during a ceremony held outside behind the school.
The entire high school student body gathered on the grass to watch a performance by a rock band and teachers deliver certificates of achievement to students.
A band with no name comprised of PHS students played popular rock songs by acts like the Red Hot Chili Peppers before a crowd of about 75 students and teachers.
The live act played for about 30 minutes before Principal Larry McDonald took the stage.
Before introducing the first teacher, Sandy Revier, McDonald coaxed reluctant senior Mahala Harris to come up for one song.
McDonald introduced teacher after teacher who handed out a variety of awards including certificates for outstanding achievement and most improved among others.
Students in the audience applauded as their classmates came forward to accept their certificates.
Roars of approval rang out from the crowd as some students strode to the stage.
Students demonstrated a high degree of school spirit during the event.
As the school year comes to an end, students that have achieved beyond the expectations of teachers and those that have shown marked improvement over the course of the year are recognized for the their dedication to education.
The last day of classes for the 2012-2013 school year will be on Friday.
