PLAINS – After six months of planning, the 51st Plains Day is ready to take place on June 1st.

This year the theme for the event is Cowboy Boots and Country Roots and volunteers have been hard at work getting everything ready for the big day.

According to organizer, Carol Day, the original purpose of Plains Day is for local businesses to thank the community by offering family friendly fun to the residents of Plains.

This year two events will be brought back with the Husband Calling Contest and the Kids Sack Race making a comeback.

The day will start off at 7 a.m. with the Mason’s Breakfast at the VFW offering pancakes and breakfast foods to those in attendance.

Proceeds from the event will go towards scholarships for the school as well as for the Bike for Books program.

Day explained the Bike for Books program encourages students to read. Each student will get a raffle ticket for the amount of books they have read throughout the year and will have the opportunity to win brand new bikes at the end of the year.

From there, the car show and parade registration will start with the parade kicking off at noon. Although it is unsure of how many participants will be in the parade, Day hopes for a good outcome.

The car show begins at 12:30 p.m. on the green way where vendors will also line the grassy area and live music will be provided. Inflatable bounce houses for the kids will be available at the elementary school.

The car show has been taking place since 2005 and this year there are no changes. The top-place winners will receive trophies for their car while second and third place will receive ribbons. The awards ceremony for the car and motorcycle show will be held at 4 p.m.

As part of the business appreciation aspect of the day, the Rocky Mountain Bank will be providing an Ice Cream Social from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and will also host the annual Turtle Races, which will take place behind the bank at 1 p.m.

At 6:30 a group of kids will take to the stage at the El Johnson Memorial Pool Park showcasing their hard work and practice to the crowd. The day will end will a drive-in move also held at the Pool Park.

“I think it’s going to be a great time for families,” said Day. “We want everyone to come out and have a good time.”
