Camp Bighorn receives a face lift for the upcoming busy season

PLAINS – Over 100 volunteers went straight to work at Camp Bighorn, pruning the garden, painting the new shop and cutting trails for the upcoming summer camp season.
Operations director Nancy Zdenek explained that every Memorial Day weekend volunteers come out from near and far to help spruce up the camp. And with 90 acres of land, the task at hand was large.
Volunteers could be seen cleaning the overgrown pond, painting fence rails and getting things organized. The weather held up as the gloomy clouds fought hard to keep the rain back, providing the volunteers with a nice, cool atmosphere to work in.
Ruth Jorgensen has been coming to the camp since 1988, two years after it opened, referring to Camp Bighorn as her home away from home, Jorgensen comes out for Washington for the work weekend to do her part.
“It helps give me a sense of ownership,” said Jorgensen, talking about how her efforts help give back.
Jorgensen stated the camp has provided her family with good bonding experiences and spiritual growth. It has become a place where her and her family continue to come, to grow and enjoy their time surrounded by the beautiful nature.
Along with the volunteers, the staff was also hard at work cleaning up the grounds.
The camp, which focuses around adventure, offers those who come ample opportunities to explore the outdoors, whether it is through rafting, rock climbing or hiking.
The last week of June will offer new youth leaders training in the varity of different activities the camp offers.
According to Zdenek, the camp has about 20 full time staff and is looking forward to some new faces this summer - hopefully ones who are eager to work and grow in the calming setting of the camp.
Surrounded by mountains and with the river close by, the camp located on Highway 135 will open its doors to eager campers. As the campers expand their spirtuality, they will also be tested on their bravery, conquering one adventure at a time.
Summer camps begin the first weekend of July, and campers from all over will come to Camp Bighorn to fulfill their need for adventure and spiritual well being.
