PLAINS- As the traditional aromas of barbeque wafted through the air, students from Plains elementary school lined up for hot dogs, hamburgers and other assorted fare during the annual end-of-the-year event behind the school.

While Principal John Holland manned the grill; teachers, students and parents waited patiently in line before sitting down together for the meal. Teachers and parents handed out freshly grilled cuisine to around 50 students and adults.

Students and chaperones sat down on picnic tables while others found a sunny spot in the grass near the playground. Students munched on hot dogs and burgers before heading to the playground.

Getting an early start on their summer vacation, students fanned out across the playground rushing from activity to activity as if the equipment was in danger of disappearing.

Some kids shot hoops on the basketball court while others made their way around the winding main structure of the playground. Students slid down the slides and hung from monkey bars as parents and teachers watched from the sidelines.

As a game of kickball sprung up on the field adjacent to the main recreational area, some kids were content to play on the swing set or just throw a ball against the walls of the school.

As the event wound to a close, students will continue to enjoy some time away from classes and teachers. The annual end-of-the-year barbeque serves as a way to celebrate the arrival of the summer vacation for students as well as teachers.

“It’s really for all of us, kids and teachers. We are just as exhausted as they are and ready for summer vacation,” said art teacher Kristin Cole.

The last day of classes at Plains elementary was May 24.
