Superior sixth graders hit the river for outdoor school

On Thursday Angie Hopwood's sixth grade class headed from their camp at Savenac Nursery to Big Creek to learn how to fish. The day on the creek was part of the class's annual Outdoor Education week at Savenac and was taught by Randy Kryzko. Montana FWP donated supplies for the sixth graders to use for the day.

Throughout the week, Hopwood's class gained valuable lessons on the outdoors from a variety of presenters. The class learned about Native American culture, archaeology, boating, fire starting and more.

"They are an enthusiastic group and are just excited about everything," Hopwood said. For over 40 years sixth graders have headed to Savenac for Outdoor Education and this year's class got an unexpected surprise—Wednesday morning snow. Hopwood said the kids were good sports and went with it, but thankfully the weather improved later in the day. "They are stewards of the land and the theme all week has been taking care of the land," Hopwood said.
