Superfund Cleanup nearing completion for Town of Superior

| November 6, 2013 5:14 PM

SUPERIOR - According to Duc Nguyen, EPA’s On-Scene Coordinator, “we are approaching the completion date, only two weeks away.” EPA has been in Superior since early September removing contaminated soil from Mineral County Airport, as well as 38 residential properties, and transporting it to Wood Gulch Repository. A final briefing is scheduled with the Mineral County Commissioners on Thursday, November 7 at 9:30 am. The public is encouraged to attend.

The Superior Technical Assistant Committee, or STAC for short, has been tracking the project. Anita Bailey, STAC Project Manager, says that while the project has taken some years to get to this point, still, the EPA has done a really good job of removing potentially hazardous mine waste from the community. She suggests people come to the briefing both to learn more about what’s been done and simply to thank EPA for making Superior a safer place to live and raise a family.

Afterwards, STAC (Superior Technical Assistance Committee) will hold a meeting to address future plans on the Superfund project: the cleanup of mine tailings in Flat Creek, and closure of the repository. Work is ongoing that will lead to cleanup decisions that could affect the look and function of the creek as well as future local access to the repository. The meeting will be held in the STAC Office, from 12-1, in the Mineral County Chamber Office at 102 River St. in Superior.

The STAC, which is funded by a grant from the EPA for the purpose of helping the community understand project developments and meaningfully participate in agency decisions. For more information, please call the STAC/Chamber Office 822-4891 or STAC coordinator, Mary Jo Berry, 822-2213.
