SUPERIOR – On November 11, the Superior Masonic Lodge will be welcoming Mineral County residents to join them for a free breakfast to honor veterans living in the community and elsewhere.

According to Gar Dahl, the primary contact for the event, the breakfast will run from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. The Masons, with their co-organizers, will be serving sausage, eggs, coffee and juice. The breakfast is free to the public and anyone in the county is welcome to join.

The event is being hosted as a collaborative effort by the Masons, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Order of Eastern Star.

Along with the breakfast, Dahl said the VFW will be holding a ceremony on Superior’s Memorial Bridge at 11 a.m. At the time of press it was unknown if the ceremony would be a performance of Taps or if it would include a 21 gun salute.

The organizers have been working with the Methodist and Catholic churches to arrange for the bells to be rung 11 times at 11 a.m. This time has special significance as the armistice of World War I was signed November 11th at 11 in the morning.

According to Dahl, the event is a celebration of Veteran’s Day and a way to remind everyone what they day is all about. He feels many people have forgotten the significance of Veteran’s Day as a commemoration of WWI ending and hopes to remind people of the fact.

“It’s just to honor our veterans,” said Dahl. “[We want to] bring home the fact that Veteran’s Day is more than just a bank holiday.”

While this is the first year for the event, the Masons, VFW and OES hope to make it an annual Veteran’s Day celebration.

According to Dahl, in January members of the Masons and OES will be performing characterizations of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.
