THOMPSON FALLS – The Lady Hawks played hard against tough competition this week, coming up short but gaining valuable experiences from both games.

The ladies competed against Class A team Frenchtown on Tuesday, September 24, a team that is estimated to be one of the top competitors at the state competition.

The game proved to be very exciting, the Lady Hawks keeping up with their opponents throughout most of the match.

During the first set Shey Hannum got the crowd riled up, flying into the air pretending to spike the ball but purposefully barely popped the ball over the net, confusing her competitors and landing the ball perfectly on the court to put a point on the scoreboard.

Following the strong lead, Logan Beckman served up an ace helping to further the lead. Thompson Falls remained in the lead most of the set; with Frenchtown coming back tying the game 19 to 19.

Madison Fichett spiked the ball for another point, but the Lady Hawks fell behind and finished the set 21 to 25.

In the second set, Frenchtown began strong, with the ladies of Thompson Falls slowly diminishing their opponents lead as points kept coming in strong. Pulling into the lead, Thompson Falls took the set 25 to 22.

Frenchtown started the third set with a number of points and the Lady Hawks battled with them to try to catch up ending the set 13 to 25.

Although, unable to catch up, the fourth set would come down to a very close finish, holding everyone in anticipation.

Starting off, the ladies put five points on the board, continuing to keep a lead throughout the remainder of the set. Frenchtown was able to catch up tying the score and continuing to further their lead.

It was apparent that Frenchtown wanted the win, but the Lady Hawks were not willing to give it up easy. Overall, the final score was 22 to 25, ending the game 1 to 3.

“We didn’t come up with wins last week but we played well against Frenchtown,” said Head Coach Sandra Kazmierczak. “It was an excellent game.”

Hannum had 15 kills; Fitchett brought in eight kills, one SB and 14 digs; Autrey Hannum had eight kills; Shasta Wilson brought in six kills and 13 digs; Beckman had three kills, 14 digs and two aces; Angela Padden had 13 digs and Erica Sorlie had 34 SA, two aces and 11 digs.

On Saturday, the ladies traveled to Deer Lodge where they would also stretch the match to four sets but would be unable to succeed in a win, ending the match 1 to 3 (24 to 25, 25 to 12, 16 to 25 and 21 to 25.)

Wilson had 13 kills and two SB; Shey Hannum had five kills and four SB, Beckman had four kills and nine digs; Fitchett three aces and 13 digs; Padden brought in 18 digs and Sorlie had 25 SA.

The Lady Hawks will be competing in two conference games next against Troy and Eureka this week.

Coach Kazmierczak said the team is very capable and continually improving their game together.

“They are capable. I think the team is staying together very well and I think that’s a big step for us,” said Coach Kazmierczak.

The away game against Troy will be on October 3 and the home game against Eureka will take place on Saturday at 6 p.m.
