Robert Jessie Humphrey
Robert Jessie Humphrey, known as RJ or Bob, lived at Clark Fork Long Term Care facility with Dorothy, his wife of 69 years. Dad went to be with his Savior, the Lord Jesus, and many loved family members and friends, on 10 September 2013. He was born in Bradley, Arkansas, 3 February 1922, as the second oldest in a family of eight surviving siblings.
A particular job that he often spoke of was that of breaking horses, the hard way. Riding till the horse stopped. One of his ankles would ‘pop’ as he walked the rest of his life, the result of a horse stepping on that ankle. Animals could sense his care for them and he always ‘had a way with them.’
Dad left home when he was 14, staying with various relatives for short periods at each one. He told stories of hopping trains and experiencing God’s protection, never having been harmed. As a youth, he and friends would swim au naturel in the Red River, being chased out by alligators many times. On a few occasions he walked the railroad bridge crossing the Red River, only to be caught midway by an oncoming train. He would drop beneath the bridge and hang on while the train passed over him.
Dad worked in a foundry all his life, hard work. He and mom have lived in Arkansas, Texas, So. California and Oregon. They moved to Plains in 2008, needing to be near their children. Surviving family members are his wife, Dorothy; daughters Elizabeth (Greg) DeNoble and Bea Dobbelaere; and, son Robert Humphrey; grandchildren, Darin, Gabrielle, Mark, Todd, Vickie and Alan (deceased). There are many great and great-great grandchildren. His sole surviving brother is Loyd Humphrey, Oregon City, OR and there are uncountable nieces and nephews.
In the last few days of his life on earth, he talked of brothers and his Mama, wanting to see them, saying that he was ready to go. He is enjoying his Lord and family now. We all miss him and look forward to the time when “the circle will be unbroken.”
There will be no service at Dad’s request.
