SUPERIOR – The strumming of guitar music filled Superior’s Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Tuesday evening as the Mineral County Performing Arts Council presented the classical guitar playing of Dr. Roger Glenn Pafford.

Dr. Pafford, who works at the Mineral Community Hospital, said he studied Classical Guitar at Stetson University in DeLand, FL and did his Master level studies at the University of South Carolina in Columbus, SC. After a seven-year break, he began playing again as a way to recover from long hours in hospitals and clinics during his medical residency.

“It revitalizes me after long hours caring for our local residents and reminds me to live a bit after hours,” Dr. Pafford said.

He said that his music evolved over time from academic training and performing into something that now recreates his mind.

“I get to do this for fun now,” he said.

Dr. Pafford played seven pieces from composers Fernando Sol, Augustin Barrios Mangoré, Isaac Albeniz, Gasper Sanz, Heitor Villa-Lobos and Francisco Tárrega.

He explained his instrument has a clear voice that is capable of being as loud or quiet as he needs and plays “in as many colors of tone as a performer might ask for.”

His guitar was built in 2012 in Bozeman, MT. When he saw it, and heard it play, he knew he had to have it.

According to Jim Goss, Treasurer of MCPAC, the council discovered Dr. Pafford when Anita Bailey, a member of MCPAC, heard that he was moving to the area and that he played classical guitar.

Goss said they approached Dr. Pafford and asked if he would like to play. When he accepted, they gave him a place of honor at the top of their season.
