St. Regis victorious over Two Eagle River

ST. REGIS – The Lady Tigers of St. Regis took a straight set victory against the Two Eagle River Lady Eagles during Thursday’s game in St. Regis.

The girls played really well against their competition, winning the first two sets with healthy leads of 11 and 15 points respectively. Though the Lady Eagles started to close the gap in the third set, St. Regis still gained a decisive victory in the third with a seven point lead.

Over the course of the game, Head Coach Jennifer Pruitt made sure to give all the girl’s time on the court, playing both her junior varsity and varsity squads. Because Two Eagle had a less experienced team this year, Pruitt said she favored her younger and newer players over the team’s veterans on the varsity squad.

“I tried to make it a fair game for everybody involved,” said Pruitt. “I was trying to keep the game [from being] a runaway.”

Pruitt praised Junior Ashley Cheesman, normally a setter for the JV squad, for playing a great back row game and getting the team high of five digs during the game. Junior Cheyenne Lewis was also acknowledged by Pruitt for getting seven aces. Sophomore Chelsie Wilson and Junior Gabby Moeller both made a lot of kills and blocks throughout the game.

Pruitt described Thursday’s game as fairly quiet. But with three games this week, she said it would be really interesting.

“Next week [should] have some good stuff,” she said.

According to Pruitt, the team worked on their defensive and offensive coverage leading up to their Monday game in Alberton against the Lady Panthers. She said she wants the team to get their coverage fine-tuned in time for the tournament at the end of October.

Pruitt was confident of the Lady Tiger’s chances in the game against Alberton, as well as their Tuesday game against the Victor Lady Pirates. Pruitt feels the team is in a good place moving into the regional tournament.

“It should go well,” Pruitt said. “Now we’re six and three at our conference, so we’re trying to fine tune everything before conference.”

The Lady Tigers’ next game is in Arlee, this Thursday, against the Arlee Scarlet Warriors.
