Thompson Falls hopes to bounce back on the gridiron
THOMPSON FALLS – The Bluehawks played a big game against Ronan on Friday, October 11. The team faced the goliaths full throttle ahead and did not give up until the game was over.
The close game came down to the fourth quarter where Thompson Falls was no longer able to keep up. The game was lost 38 to 12.
As the game started, Ronan kept steadily progressing down the field, gaining their first touchdown of the night. The Bluehawks fought back to stay caught up and matched the progress down the field, however, they were unable to come up with a touchdown.
Once Ronan regained possession of the ball, Trais Hoisington made an interception, taking the control away from the Chiefs.
Despite efforts, the score would remain at 8 to 0 for the remainder of the quarter.
As the second quarter began, Ronan started with possession of the ball. As Thompson Falls took over, Jake Smith plowed straight through Ronan’s defense gaining yards left and right.
Nate Norris continued the advancement and ran the ball, gaining the Bluehawks a first down. Ronan decided it was their turn to intercept the ball, however, it was short lived as they fumbled and Hoisington recovered the ball and the control of the game.
The Bluehawks were unstoppable and Jake Smith gained the first touchdown of the night for the blue and gold fans. The score began to even out, 6 to 8.
The touchdown flustered Ronan and the Chiefs fumbled the ball with Tanner Laws recovering it. The next few plays would continue to move the Bluehawks towards the touchdown, however, a penalty would halt their progress.
As the Chiefs took control, they gained another touchdown but that did not phase Thompson Falls as they matched their touchdown bringing the score up to 12 to 16.
The fourth quarter tended to favor Ronan as the team continued bringing in points, ending the game for the night.
Overall, the boys played well against Ronan and Head Coach Curt Kegel was proud of his team.
“We played with them and I’m proud of my kids. They hung in there and had some momentum but they never got there,” said Coach Kegel.
Coach Kegel explained his team was a lot smaller than their opponents and he believes they got worn out in the process.
“We got a fumble on the two-yard line and that kind of took the wind out of us. If we scored there, it would have changed the game,” explained Coach Kegel.
The Bluehawks had recently changed up their defense. Because of the change, the team has seen a big difference and has credited numerous interceptions to the change.
As the boys continue into the season, they head to Troy on Friday for what is expected to be a close matchup.
“We’ll be able to play with them and it should be a very good game,” said Coach Kegel. Their next and last home game will be on Friday, October 25 at 7 p.m.
