PLAINS - The rodeo arena at the Sanders County Fairgrounds was the site of a special ceremony on Saturday to honor a citizen of Plains for her service to the community. Sally Braun was the 20th person presented with the Sanders County Community Service Award for her continuing contributions to Plains. The award is sponsored by the Sanders County Fair Commission.

As the rodeo announcer read a speech detailing Braun’s many accolades, she smiled shyly at the attention and waved to the applauding crowd that rose to their feet to honor her. Braun acknowledged the crowd for a few moments before making her way into the grandstands to watch the rodeo. She was also the grand marshal at the parade on Saturday.

“I was very honored,” said Braun.

For 32 years Braun has been the secretary for Plains Schools. As secretary, Braun is responsible for a wide variety of tasks on a daily basis including enrolling students, making sure lunches are available and ensuring students are attending class.

She moved to Plains in 1970 from Mile City, MT. Braun has raised six children in Plains including four who went to her schools during her tenure. She was previously involved with the community as a Girl Scout Leader for five years and as a 4H leader for six years.

Braun is also heavily involved with her church. As a member of the board for the Harvest Community Church of God, Braun shares responsibility for missions and outreach.

The award for Sanders County Community service is presented every year to a county resident “who has performed acts which have benefitted the nominee’s community and the county in a positive manner.”

Braun was accompanied in the arena by Sanders County Fair Commission Vice Chairman Chris McGuigan. According to a press release from the Sanders County Fair Commission, she “has had a tremendous impact on the lives of all the youngsters who have attended public school in Plains. Sally has been a mainstay in the Plains Public School system. Her support of the students goes well beyond moral support.”

Braun is the 20th person to receive the award that was started in 1994. She said she has continued to be the secretary for Plains Schools because of the kids she gets to interact with on a daily basis.

“I love my job,” said Braun. “I love working with the kids and the staff. I enjoy the kids very much.”
